You can update your video's title, description, thumbnail, privacy, embed customizations and more from its settings. To edit your video's settings, click the Settings button beneath the player on your video page.
Updating your video details
You can update your video's title, description, and language on the General tab, Info section in your video settings. Titles can be a maximum of 128 characters and descriptions can be a maximum of 5000 characters.
💡Tip: If you add timestamps into the description field such as:
00:30 Introduction
03:00 Chapter 1
The timestamps will appear as links in the description below the video once you save the settings. Clicking on them will bring the viewer to that point in the video.
If you want to point to another site in your video description, you can input (or paste) the full URL in the description. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to create a worded hyperlink (e.g. "click here").
If you'd like to create a custom URL for your video, head to the Distribution tab, Discovery section in your video settings. The format of custom video URLs is vimeo.com/username/thecustompart. For example, a video on our staff account about the Vimeo player has the custom URL: vimeo.com/staff/player.
Changing the thumbnail of your video
To change your thumbnail, go to the video's individual page and click Settings beneath the video player. By default, you'll be on the General tab of your settings first. Under the Info section, choose "Edit thumbnail" and select an option for picking your perfect image:
-
Upload: Want to upload your own thumbnail image? Clicking the "Upload" button will allow you to chose a JPG, GIF, or PNG file from your computer. Please note that custom thumbnail files cannot be larger than 9600px wide or 5400px tall. For best results, we recommend uploading an image with the same dimensions as your video (for example, uploading a 1920px x 1080px thumbnail file for a 1920 x 1080 video).
- Select from video: Begin playing the video in the preview player to the right of your screen to select a specific frame. You can use the Shift + arrow keys on your keyboard to scrub through your video frame by frame. When you find the image you like, choose "Select this frame" in the top left hand corner of the preview player.
-
Random: We'll generate eight thumbnails for you when you click the "Random" button. If you don't see anything you like, just click "Refresh" in the top right corner and we'll cook up eight new images for you to peruse. Once you find the frame you like, click "Use this frame."
✦ Adding credits to your video
In the Distribution tab, Discovery section of your video settings, scroll down to the "Credits" section. You can add yourself, or another contributor, to your video's credits by clicking the + button and entering their name, role, and Vimeo profile link or email address. If you follow the person you are crediting on Vimeo, entering their name will auto-populate their Vimeo profile link. Save your changes, and the credit will now appear on your video page. Please note that adding credits is not available if your video is set to "Hide this video from vimeo.com" or "People with the private link." The person who is credited will then be able to add the video in which they’re credited to their profile page.
Please also note that you’ll only be able to add someone to a video’s credits if that person is already following you on Vimeo.
You can remove a credit at any time by going back to the Distribution tab, Discovery section in your video settings, clicking the red X next to name of the person you want to remove, and saving your changes.
✦ Replacing your video
If you would like to upload a new version of your video, but keep the URL, analytics, likes, and comments associated with its video page, use the "Replace video" feature.
On the Collaboration tab, Versions sections of your video settings, click the "Replace video" button to upload a new video file. Using this option will retain the video page's URL, analytics, likes, comment, tags, and all the other information associated with the video.
During the replacement process, the original video will remain viewable while the new one is uploaded. Once the replacement video finishes uploading and begins conversion, the original video will no longer be viewable, and will soon be replaced.
✦ Deleting your video
You can delete your video by going to the General tab of your video settings, scrolling all the way down and clicking the red “Delete video” button. You’ll need to enter your account password to complete the deletion of your video. If you joined us via Facebook, Google, or Apple, you will need to set a password for your Vimeo account before performing any actions on the site that require a Vimeo password, such as deleting videos, deleting your account, or signing in from different devices. To do so, please go to your Account Settings and under Password, click on the “Change Password” link. There you will be prompted to enter in a new password and confirm that new password.
To delete more than one video in one swift action, pay a visit to our handy video manager. Select the videos you’d like to remove from Vimeo, choose Delete from the right hand side, then enter your password and confirm the action.
Depending on how long ago you deleted your video, we may be able to restore it. Please contact us if you accidentally delete a video.
