If you followed a Vimeo link and landed on an error page displaying: “Sorry, we couldn’t find that page” instead of the video, it usually means the video can’t be shown at that address. Work through the checks below, most of the time the cause is a privacy setting, and there’s a quick fix.
1. Privacy settings (the most common cause)
Most error pages come from a video whose privacy settings don’t allow you to watch it from where you are, or with the account you’re using. Match your situation below.
Private video: access is limited to specific people
If you’re the viewer:
- The owner has to add your email address to the video from Vimeo. Ask them to do this if they haven’t.
- Make sure you’re logged in to the exact Vimeo account (email) the video was shared with, not a different or personal account.
If you’re the owner:
- Open the video → Settings → Privacy, and add the viewer’s email under the people allowed to watch.
- Confirm you shared the link with the same email you added.
Embed only: the video plays only when embedded
If you’re the viewer:
- This video is set to play only inside a website where it’s embedded, not on its direct vimeo.com link. Watch it on the page where it was embedded instead of opening the raw link.
If you’re the owner:
- If viewers should be able to open the direct link, change the privacy from “Embed only” to a setting that allows viewing on Vimeo (e.g. Unlisted or Public).
“My company only”: restricted to your organization
If you’re the viewer:
- Make sure you’re logged in with your corporate email, the one tied to your company’s Vimeo organization. A personal account won’t have access.
If you’re the owner:
- Confirm the viewer is a member of your Vimeo organization. If they’re external, either add them or switch the video to a privacy setting that allows people outside the company.
2. Other common causes
The video was deleted
- Viewer: If the video was removed, the link will no longer work for anyone. Ask the owner whether it still exists or was re-uploaded elsewhere.
- Owner: Deleted videos can’t be recovered from the link. If it was removed by mistake, re-upload it and share the new link.
The link is incomplete or mistyped
- Viewer: Some links include an extra code (for example, an unlisted video needs its full link). Re-copy the complete, original link and make sure no characters are missing.
- Owner: Share the full link straight from Vimeo’s share panel rather than typing or editing it by hand.
Region or country restriction
- Viewer: The owner may allow playback only in certain regions. If you’re travelling or on a VPN, try again from an allowed location.
- Owner: Check Settings → Privacy for any geo-restrictions and adjust them if viewers in that region should have access.
The link is old or has changed
- Viewer: Links shared long ago may no longer point to the right place. Ask the owner for the current link.
- Owner: If the video was moved or its address changed, re-share the up-to-date link.
Still stuck?
Quick checks for viewers: confirm you’re logged in to the right account, try a different browser or device, and ask the owner to re-share the link.
Owners: if the privacy settings look correct and viewers still can’t watch, contact Vimeo Support with the video link and the viewer’s email.
