An external encoder is a tool that converts your audio and video into a format that can be streamed live to your Vimeo event. This article provides the recommended settings, compatible software, and general guidelines for using an external encoder while hosting a live event on Vimeo.

What is an external encoder?
An external encoder converts audio and video into a compatible format, compressing data to reduce bandwidth usage. This enables real-time delivery and playback on various devices. An encoder is essential for streaming live events.
Recommended encoder settings
We recommend setting the following for optimal performance when considering an encoder for your live event:
- Codec: H.264
- Output resolution: 1920 x 1080 (maximum)
- Frame rate: 30fps is recommended (max input is 60fps)
- Key frame interval: 3 seconds
If your encoder lacks a designated field for your event's stream key, you can add it to the end of your RTMP URL. Ensure you include a forward slash between the URL and the stream key.
Compatible third-party encoders
Although we can't endorse a particular third-party encoder, here are some that are compatible with Vimeo. For further instructions, please check their help centers.
- Wirecast
- SlingStudio
- Open Broadcaster Software (OBS)
- Teradek encoders
- VIZRT Tricaster
- Epiphan Pearl and Pearl 2
- XSplit
Vimeo-based solutions
We also offer several streaming solutions:
- Our web-based production tool allows you to go live without additional equipment. Read more at ‘How to navigate the web-based production tool’.
- You can go live directly from the Vimeo Android app or the Vimeo iOS app
- A license for the Livestream Studio desktop client (available for Windows and Mac) is included with a Vimeo Premium or Advanced account. Vimeo Enterprise accounts with the Events feature added include three licenses.
Making the most out of using an external encoder
- If you’re using encoding software on a Mac or Windows PC for your event, we suggest using a separate machine for different tasks to prevent CPU usage spikes that can negatively impact your stream quality and cause lag.
- For example, one machine can be dedicated to encoding, while another handles previewing, monitoring, and moderating the chat.
