In 2026, we began introducing Managed storage for individual Vimeo plans.
Before that, every video in your library counted toward a single storage limit, regardless of its privacy setting.
Now, all new plans come with unlimited storage for public and non-embeddable videos. Storage limits apply only to embeddable and non-public videos. This is called Managed storage.
This article explains which videos count toward managed storage, how much each plan includes, and how to work out whether your current plan is right for you.
What is managed storage?
Your Vimeo storage is split into two parts:
- Public storage is for videos set to Public with embedding turned off. Anyone can watch these videos on vimeo.com, and they appear on your profile. Public storage is unlimited on every individual plan, including Free.
- Managed storage is for every other video: embeddable videos (ones that can be played on other websites), and videos with any privacy setting other than Public (Unlisted, Password, Embed only, or Private). Each plan includes a set amount of managed storage.
In short, managed storage covers the videos where you control who can watch and where they watch, whether that's on your own website, through a private link, or behind a password.
Which videos count toward managed storage?
A video counts toward managed storage if either of the following is true:
- It's embeddable. Embedding is turned on in the video's sharing settings. This applies even if you haven't embedded the video anywhere yet.
- It's not public. Its privacy is set to anything other than Public.
A video doesn't count toward managed storage when both of the following are true:
- Its privacy is set to Public.
- Embedding is turned off.
⚠️ Note: If you see that a public video is counting toward your managed storage, check whether embedding is turned on.
How do I check how much managed storage I'm using?
If your account is on Free:
- Log in to Vimeo and go to your account settings.
- Your managed storage usage and your plan's limit are shown on this page.
If your account is on an older plan (like Starter, Standard, Advanced, Plus, or Pro), your account settings show your total storage usage, which includes public videos. Your managed storage figure will appear once your plan transitions to Creator, Core, or Professional.
What happens if I reach my managed storage limit?
If your embeddable and non-public videos reach your plan's managed storage limit:
- You can still upload new videos.
- You won't be able to embed new uploads or change their privacy to anything other than Public until you free up managed storage or upgrade.
- Your existing videos aren't affected. They keep playing, and their links and embeds keep working.
What happens if I move to a plan with less managed storage?
If your embeddable and non-public videos add up to more than your new plan's managed storage limit, some of those videos will be locked:
- Locked videos are never deleted. They stay in your account.
- Locked videos can't be played by anyone, including through shared links and embeds. You can't edit or download them while they're locked.
- Videos are locked starting with the most recently uploaded. Your oldest videos stay available for as long as they fit within your limit.
If your new plan doesn't support a privacy setting you've been using, such as password protection, those videos are switched to Private. If you upgrade again later, their original privacy settings are restored.
Before you change plans from the Billing page, we'll show you a warning if the change will lock any videos or change their privacy settings.
How to unlock videos
- Upgrade to a plan with enough managed storage. Your videos unlock as soon as your new plan covers them.
- Make videos public. Set a locked video to Public with embedding turned off, and it no longer counts toward managed storage. You can find locked videos in your library.
- Delete videos you no longer need that count toward managed storage. As space frees up, the next locked video unlocks automatically.
⚠️ Note: Deleting a locked video is permanent—they don’t go to Recently deleted.
