Overview of categories
Vimeo Categories are a great way to discover videos, creators, and collections related to your interests. Every video in these categories is hand-selected by our Curation Team — take a look.
Vimeo members can select up to two categories and one sub-category that best describes their videos. Vimeo curators regularly refresh the content displayed and featured within the category, pulling from the large pool of videos that have been categorised by their creators.
Many more videos are uploaded and categorised than we can display on category pages, so please be aware that categorised videos won’t show up immediately and many will not ever appear on category pages. However, categorising your videos still helps your videos become more discoverable to people who are searching for videos.
Categorize your videos
To add your video to a category, follow these steps:
- Go to your Library and select the video.
- Scroll down past the video player to Categories. Select the plus sign icon + to add a category. Choose from the options that appear. It will be saved automatically.
-
In the module, select up to two categories and a sub-category for each and they get automatically added for your video.
💡Tip: Once you have added a category to your video, that category will appear on your profile page.
Categorize your groups and channels
As with individual videos, you can add groups or channels you created or moderate into up to two categories.
Vimeo curators occasionally update the collections featured under Categories. To increase your collection’s chance of showing up there, be sure to give your group or channel an appealing title and appearance and update it regularly with awesome content.
To categorize your group or channel, head to the "Basic" tab in your collection's settings, check the box next to up to two categories, and save your changes.
Follow a category
To follow a category, visit the category's page (e.g. https://vimeo.com/categories/animation) and select +Follow. If you follow a category, videos featured in that category will appear in your feed.
Overview of Tags
Tags are keywords or short phrases that describe your video. For example, if you tag your Hawaii vacation video with the words “Hawaii” and “vacation,” you'll be able to easily find other related videos and help other Vimeo users find your videos.
Tag your videos
You can use up to 20 tags for each video. We encourage you to add only relevant tags as too many tags can make your video harder to find.
To add tags to your video, follow these steps:
- Go to your Library and select the video.
-
Scroll down past the video player to Tags. Type in keywords according to the video.
💡Tip: Using multiple tags can reach more users and thus increase the views on each video.
- Press the Enter key after you've added your keyword.
- The tags will save automatically.
- To remove a tag, click the X on the right side of the tag.
💡Tip: Tags are separated by commas. If you would like to copy and paste tags, copy the list with commas and paste in the keyword text box. For example, the list 'video, tags, product,' would create a tag for each.
If you just recently uploaded a new video or recently made it public, it may take a little while to show up in our search results. If your videos do not appear in search results after a day, try adding more relevant terms to the description or title of your video.
⚠️Note: Tags are not available for apps.
