When adding music or an audio track to your video, you can either select a track from the royalty-free stock music library or upload your own audio file.
đź’ˇTip: If your uploaded footage contains music or background sounds that you would like to adjust the volume of (or mute), you can do so by using the media inspector toolbar.

Which types of audio tracks are allowed?
Supported audio file types include: MP3, M4P, WMA, ADTS, OGG, and WAV.
When you upload your own music or audio track, you are confirming that you own the music or have obtained the necessary licenses to incorporate it into a video as required by Vimeo's Terms of Service.
Subscription services such as Apple Music, Google Play Music, and Spotify do not allow their music from their platform to be uploaded and or/used in the editor.
Adding music from the stock music library
You can add stock music from the music library to your video. Audio in the stock music library are royalty-free.
To add music from the stock library:
- Select Music from the left-side toolbar.

You can select from Featured tracks, All Music, and Uploaded audio tracks.
- You can also use filters to help you find the perfect track for your video.
- Each thumbnail displays the duration time of the music track.
- Preview tracks by hovering over the thumbnail for that track.
- Select the thumbnail for the track to add it to your video.
- Replace a previously added track by selecting another or select None if you would like no music.
Audio tracks are added to the Timeline as separate elements on their own layer.
How to upload your own audio track
You can also upload an audio track from your local device if you own the music or have obtained all necessary licenses to incorporate it into a video. This is required by Vimeo’s Terms of Service.
To upload your own audio track to your video:
- Select Music in the sidebar of editor.
- Select Upload Music at the bottom of the expanded menu.
- Confirm that you agree to Vimeo's music submission terms, as required by Vimeo's Terms of Service in the popup window.
- Upload your audio file from your local device to add it to your video.
After you’ve added your audio track(s) to your video, you can adjust them by adjusting the volume or adjusting the duration of the audio track.
Adjusting volume
Adjusting the volume of your audio track(s) is helpful when you are playing a voiceover on one track with background music on another track. It is also helpful if the footage you’ve added has its own audio.
To adjust the volume of your audio track:
- Select the audio track that you would like to adjust in the Timeline.
- Select the Audio volume button in the inspector toolbar.
- Use the slider to increase or decrease the volume of the audio track.
đź’ˇTip: You can also select the Split button above the Timeline to divide the audio track into multiple parts if you would like to adjust the volume multiple times in one track. An example of this is if you would like the music to play louder while there is no sound in your footage and softer if someone is speaking in your footage.
Adjusting the duration of your audio track
You can trim or extend your audio track in the Timeline.
To trim or extend your audio track:
- Select the audio track in the Timeline.
- Select the edge of the start or end of the audio track and drag to the left or right to trim or extend its duration.
💡Tip: You can extend an audio track’s duration that you have previously trimmed.
- You can also select the rectangle in the timeline and drag it to a new position in the timeline to change where it will appear in your video.
đź’ˇTip: If there is an unwanted gap between your audio tracks, you can hover over the gap and select the Delete gap button to join your audio tracks. You may need to trim or extend your tracks to adjust for the gap deletion.
Fade In/Fade Out
Whether you are using an audio track from the library, or you uploaded your own audio track, you can control how your audio track fades in or fades out of your video.
To adjust the audio fade in/fade out:
- Select the music track for your video in the Timeline.
- Above your video, select the Audio volume button in the media inspector toolbar. This will expand the Audio volume menu.
- Under the Fade In/Fade Out headers in the Audio volume menu, select and drag the slider to mark where the audio track should fade in and fade out of your video in seconds. You can also manually type in the number of seconds that you would like the audio to fade in or out.
