The Engagement tab in your Analytics module gives you a detailed view of how viewers interact with your videos — including how long they watch, where they drop off, and how many finish the video.
You can analyse a single video in depth or view aggregated engagement data across multiple videos at once.
Accessing engagement analytics
- Go to Analytics from the main navigation.
- Select the Engagement tab.
- Use the date range picker and video filter to choose which videos and time period you want to analyse.
The retention graph
The retention graph shows the percentage of views remaining at each point in your video, from the very start (0%) to the end (100%). A sharp drop at any point indicates that many viewers stopped watching there.
When you select multiple videos, each video is divided into 100 equal segments regardless of its actual duration. Views are aggregated by matching percentage position, which lets you compare engagement patterns across videos of different lengths.
- Y-axis: Number of views at each point.
- X-axis: Percentage point of the video (0–100%).
The engagement table
Below the graph, a table shows key engagement metrics for each video, as well as aggregate totals across all selected videos.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Views | The number of sessions in which the video starts playing |
| Average % watched | Total watch time divided by the video's length |
| Average completion rate | The proportion of views in which the video was watched to completion (within 2 seconds of the end) |
| Views at 1% | Views recorded at the 1% point of the video |
| Views at 25% | Views recorded at the 25% point |
| Views at 50% | Views recorded at the 50% point |
| Views at 75% | Views recorded at the 75% point |
| Views at 100% | Views recorded at the end of the video |
How completion rate is calculated
Completion rate is the total number of finishes divided by the total number of views — not an average of individual video completion rates.
For example:
- Video A: 5 views, 5 finishes → 100% completion
- Video B: 5,000 views, 4,000 finishes → 80% completion
- Combined completion rate: ~80% (not 90%)
Exporting engagement data
You can export the engagement table as a CSV file. Select Export at the top right of the Engagement tab. The CSV will include all rows and columns currently visible in the table.
Things to know
- Engagement measures views at a point in the video, not unique viewers. If the same viewer watches a segment more than once (for example, by scrubbing back), each watch is counted separately.
- Engagement analytics are not available via the Vimeo public API.
- Engagement analytics are available to any user or Enterprise organisation with access to the Analytics section of Vimeo.
