What are Content Ratings?
Content ratings are labels that inform viewers whether your content contains nudity, violence, profanity, or illegal substances. We ask that you rate all your videos and live events to inform viewers about any content that may include nudity, violence, profanity, or illegal substances, and to mark any content that contains advertisements. If your video contains violence, profanity, nudity, or drug/alcohol use, it should be rated for Mature Audiences.
As a video-sharing platform, we are legally required to ask users to declare whether a video they upload contains an advertisement. This ensures that anyone watching the video knows they are being exposed to this type of content.
An advertisement is defined as any content meant to influence a viewer's choice or opinion about a product or service. Even if you're uploading content to showcase your portfolio, you must mark it as containing an advertisement if it was made for that purpose.
Finally, we ask you to disclose whether your video contains AI-generated content. Learn more at How to label my videos to show they contain AI-generated content.
Why should I rate my content?
Rating your content helps viewers make informed decisions and ensures your videos are compliant and discoverable.
- Compliance: Due to local regulations in regions such as in the UK and EU, unrated public videos and live events require viewers to log in to a Vimeo account to watch them. Rating your content ensures the widest possible audience can access it.
- Discoverability: Videos with accurate ratings are more likely to appear in relevant search results.
- Community: Clear ratings help prevent negative comments and complaints from viewers.
What happens if I misrate my video?
If a Vimeo moderator finds a misrated video, the rating may be changed and locked. If we believe that you're intentionally misrating your videos to shock or confuse people, your account may be restricted or closed.
