How do I add and manage scenes in the Create editor?

You can add scenes to your video in the Create editor with footage, text, graphics, and more to fit the needs of your video. 

Margins in scenes are determined by the aspect ratio of your video 

• 16:9 (Landscape) 
  • Vertical: 120 pixels from the vertical edge of the scene. 
  • Horizontal: 120 pixels from the horizontal edge of the scene. 
• 9:16 (Portrait) 
  • Vertical: 120 pixels from the vertical edge of the scene. 
  • Horizontal: 120 pixels from the horizontal edge of the scene. 
• 1:1 (Square) 
  • Vertical: 100 pixels from the vertical edge of the scene. 
  • Horizontal: 88 pixels from the horizontal edge of the scene.

Adding a new scene

You can add a scene in the Create editor in the storyboard section in the Create editor in multiple ways: 

To add a new, blank scene: 

• Select the '+New Scene’ button above the storyboard. A new scene will appear in your storyboard.

OR 

• Hover between two existing scenes in the storyboard until a line with a plus-sign (+) appears. Select to add a new scene between the two existing scenes where the indicator needle is located.
  

You can also create a new scene by selecting media.

Adding Media: 

Only one piece of media (photo or video) can be added to a scene at a time. This limitation does not include text or graphics. 

 

To add media footage to your scene: 

1. In the sidebar, select Media. 
   
   
2. Select the source of your footage from which you would like to create a new scene.
   
   • • Upload: 
       • Upload photos or videos from your local device. Create supports multiple file formats. 
         • Supported footage includes:  
           • Photo file types: JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PNG
           • Video file types: 3GP, AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG, MTS, M2TS
     • Vimeo Record: 
       • Record your screen and/or the camera on your device. Learn more at 'How do I record videos with the Create editor?'.
     • Stock: 
       • Standard, Advanced, Pro, Business, Premium, and Enterprise subscribers can add footage from our extensive collection of stock photos and videos. Learn more at 'Compare Vimeo plans'.
     • My Media: 
       • Select from photos and videos you've previously uploaded to Vimeo. 
     • Google Photos: 
       • Log into your Google account from the Create editor and upload footage from your Google Photos library
         ⚠️Note: Google Photos footage has a 'delay' time. If a clip has not been fully processed in Google Photos and is used in a Create video, it will result in a lower-quality image. Google Photos will require some time to fully process uploaded videos. Longer videos will take more time to completely process and analyze.
3. Select the thumbnail to add the footage to your scene

• • Select 'Add as a new scene" from the plus-sign in the corner of the preview thumbnail to add it as a new scene in your video. This scene will be added after (to the right) of your current selected scene.
    
    
  • Selecting the thumbnail itself will add the footage to the selected scene. If the scene already has a photo or video in it, it will replace that content.
  • Select the Expand menu (indicated by three dots in the corner) to preview the photo or video. 
    
    • In the My Media tab, account Owners and Admins also have the option to delete footage uploaded on the team level (as opposed to footage uploaded by team members for their personal My Media collection). Footage can be deleted by clicking the garbage can icon in the corner of the expanded preview. 
      

Intros and Outros

If you have access to the Brand Kit, you can uploaded previously created branded media that represents your organization to use as an intro and/or outro for your Create video.

Scaling Media 

After adding a photo or video to your scene, you can scale your media (10%-200%). 

To scale your media: 

1. Select the photo or video in your scene.
2. Select the Size button on the inspector toolbar. 
   
   
3. Select and drag the slider to increase or decrease the size of your media or type in the value (10%-200% directly).
   
4. If the size of your media does not take up the entire space in your scene, the rest of the scene will be filled with your scene's background color. 
   
5. You can select and drag the media to reposition it within the scene. 

Changing the scene background color

You can select the background color of a scene by either selecting a palette (the top color in the stack applies to the background) or by manually selecting a color. All scenes can have the same color or they can vary.

To change the background color of a scene: 

1. Select the scene that you'd like to change the background color of in the storyboard 
2. Select Colors in the inspector toolbar above the scene to open the Colors menu. 
   
3. In the expanded Color menu, select your new background color by choosing from the color picker or adding in the hex color code (ex: #000000, #FFFFFF, #008080). 
   💡Tip: If you have access to the Brand Kit, you can select or edit your brand's colors directly from the Colors menu. 
   
4. The background color will change for that scene. Select Apply to all scenes if you would like to apply the background color to all scenes. 

Duplicating scenes

Scenes can be duplicated within the storyboard.

To duplicate a scene: 

1. Select the scene that you want to duplicate in the storyboard.
2. Select the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner to open the scene options menu. 
3. Select Duplicate.
4. A copy of the scene will appear to the right of the original scene in the video.

Reordering Scenes 

You can change the order of scenes in the Timeline of your video.

To reorder scenes:

1. In the Storyboard, select and hold the scene that you would like to move to a different position. 
2. Drag and drop the scene to the new location in your storyboard.

Deleting or hiding scenes

You can either delete a scene entirely from your video or hide it from appearing in your video without deleting the scene from your storyboard. 

To delete a scene: 

1. Hover over the scene that you would like to delete in the storyboard. 
2. Select the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner to open the options menu. 
3. Select Delete.
   
   
4. The scene will be deleted from your video. If you would like the scene to reappear in your video, you will need to recreate the scene.
   

To hide a scene: 

1. Hover over the scene you would like to hide in your story at the bottom of the page.
2. Select the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner to open the options menu. 
3. Select Hide.
   
   
4. The scene will be hidden from your video but not deleted. 

💡Tip: A hidden scene will still appear in the storyboard however, it will be greyed out and will not appear in your video. 

To show hidden scenes:

1. Hover over the hidden scene you would like to show. 
2. Select the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner to open the options menu. 
3. Select Show.
   
   
4. The hidden scene will now reappear in your storyboard and will be included in your video. 

Splitting Scenes

Splitting scenes allow you to cut a scene at a specific desired moment to divide a scene and make a second entirely new scene from the remaining footage. Cutaway scenes cannot be split. 

💡Tip: Scenes must be longer than 0.5 seconds.

To split a scene: 

1. Select the scene that you would like to divide in the storyboard. 
2. Select the Timeline button to access the Timeline for the selected scene.
3. Select the point of the scene in the timeline where you’d like to divide the scenes 
   
   
4. Select the Split icon. 
5. Your scene will be split into two separate scenes in the storyboard.

💡Tip:  If the Split icon is grayed out, select and drag the needle indicator at least 0.5 seconds from the beginning or the end of the duration of the clip. 

 

Cutaways (B-rolls)

Cutaways (B-roll), combine audio from one clip with related scenes from other footage. This footage is added to the original audio from the A-roll video clip to "visually support" the A-roll - often referred to as the "voice-over."

Your original clip (with audio) will be split into A-roll and B-roll, allowing you to create transitions between the shots/scenes. 

• A-roll is the primary audio and video of the original video clip with the original audio.
• B-roll is the supplemental footage used to visually support the A-roll.

There are 4 conditions that must be met to create a B-roll sequence: 

• The A-roll must be a video scene.
• The duration of your A-roll must be longer than 7 seconds.
• The A-roll video must contain an audio track. 
• The duration of the B-roll must fit the A-roll's available space.

To create a cutaway: 

1. Select the scene that has a prominent audio track (such as speech) that you want to play as the audio track over selected clips. This will be the A-Roll 
2. Drag and drop the supporting footage on top of your chosen scene audio. These are cutaway (B-roll) clips that will display while the audio of the main clip plays. 

To unset footage individually from a cutaway: 

1.  Select the footage from the cutaway that you would like to remove. 
2.  Drag the scene from the cutaway back to the storyboard.

 

To unset all footage from a cutaway: 

1. Select the three-dots menu in the corner of the scene of the cutaway that contains the audio track (the A-roll). This will highlight all clips that make up the cutaway. 
2. Select 'Split to scenes'. All scenes will become individual scenes on in the storyboard once more. 
   

💡Tip: Selecting Delete from the scene options menu will delete the scene from your storyboard.
