What to know before updating settings for automatic captions
Before you change your settings, take note of the following:
- Automatic captioning is available to all paid members for videos uploaded after May 25, 2022.
- If your video was uploaded before May 25, 2022, re-uploading your video will generate automatic closed captions.
- Automatic captions are activated on uploaded videos by default as long as your language on the Vimeo site is set to one that supports automatic captions.
- Captions generated automatically are labeled as "Autogenerated" to inform viewers and distinguish them from manually uploaded captions.
- Automatic captions are also available for live events.
How to activate or deactivate default captions for new uploads
You can turn off default automatic captions for all future uploads. To do so:
- Navigate to the Upload defaults section of your account settings.
- By default, the checkbox next to Allow viewers to enable automatically generated captions is checked. Uncheck the box to turn this off.
- Select Save.
Your videos still transcribe on the backend, but the auto captions will not be available to your viewers unless you activate the setting.
How to activate or deactivate automatic captions on individual videos
You can activate and deactivate automated captions for an individual video on its settings page. To do so:
- Select your video from your library to open its settings page.
- Select Languages from the left-side toolbar.
- Select the toggle to activate or deactivate captions under each language header.
Suggested next steps
