This feature requires a paid plan. Custom rules and expanded dictionary limits require Vimeo Enterprise.
The AI dictionary helps Vimeo AI use the right words for your team, company, or industry. Use it to tell the AI how to spell your product names, how to translate key terms into each language, and which formatting conventions to follow. Once saved, your dictionary applies automatically to new AI content across your team.
This article discusses what's in the AI dictionary, how to build it, and how it affects your AI credit usage.

What to know before building my AI dictionary
Before building your AI dictionary, take note of the following:
-
Account Owners and Admins can create and manage the AI dictionary.
- For Enterprise accounts with Workspaces: Workspace admins can create and manage the dictionary for their Workspace.
- Owners and Admins can also choose whether Contributors are allowed to manage the dictionary. By default, only Owners and Admins can manage it.
- Your dictionary applies to new AI content only. Transcripts, captions, and translations generated before you saved your dictionary aren't updated.
- The dictionary applies to video transcripts and captions, subtitle translations, live auto-captions, and live caption translations. AI dubbing doesn't support the dictionary yet.
- Your glossary guides the AI rather than forcing an exact result. The AI applies your terms where they fit the context, so we strongly recommend reviewing important captions and translations before you publish them.
- Entries are case-sensitive. “Vimeo” and “vimeo” are treated as two different terms.
- If your team already uses a custom vocabulary, those words are moved into your glossary automatically. You don't need to re-enter them.
- Each AI feature can process a different number of terms, so the order of your glossary matters. See How to build my AI dictionary below.
What's in the AI dictionary
The AI dictionary has three sections:
- Glossary: words and phrases that are specific to your team, company, or industry, such as brand names, product names, acronyms, and the names of people. The glossary helps the AI recognize and spell these terms correctly in your video's original language. This section replaces your custom vocabulary list.
- Term translations: how a specific term should appear in each language you translate into. Use this section to set an approved translation for a term, or to keep a term in its original form so it isn't translated at all.
- Custom rules (Enterprise): written instructions for the AI to follow, such as “write all product names in title case”. Custom rules work best for spelling, capitalization, formatting, and terminology conventions.
Your plan determines how much you can store in each section:
| Section | Self-serve plans | Vimeo Enterprise | Enterprise with expanded limits (paid add-on) |
| Glossary | 50 words | 100 words | 1,000 words |
| Term translations | 50 terms | 100 terms | 1,000 terms |
| Custom rules | Not available | 250 characters | 3,000 characters |
Expanded limits are only available on Vimeo Enterprise. To store more than your plan includes:
- Self-serve plans: upgrade to Vimeo Enterprise.
- Vimeo Enterprise: contact your Vimeo account team about the expanded limits add-on.
Two things to keep in mind about dictionary size:
- On Vimeo Enterprise, if your dictionary goes beyond the limits included in your contract, overage fees may apply for the additional capacity. Your Vimeo account team can confirm how this is billed for your account.
- Separately, and on every plan, the size of your dictionary affects how many AI credits each translation uses. See How the AI dictionary affects AI credits below.
How to build my AI dictionary
- Navigate to your team's AI Settings page.
- Locate AI dictionary under the General header and select Manage.
- Select the section you want to edit: Glossary, Term translations, or Custom rules.
- Add your entries:
- Glossary: type a word or phrase and press Enter.
- Term translations: select your source language, then enter the translation you want for each target language. Leave a cell blank to let the AI translate that term normally.
- Custom rules: write your rules in the text box, one rule per line.
- To change the order of your glossary, drag an entry to a new position. When an AI feature can process fewer terms than you have stored, the terms at the top of your list are used first, so put your most important terms there.
- Select Save.
How to upload entries with a CSV file
If you have a long list of terms, you can upload them all at once.
- Navigate to your team's AI Settings page and select Manage next to AI dictionary.
- Select Upload CSV.
- Select Download template to get an empty file in the expected format.
- Add your terms to the template, using standard language codes for each language column.
- Upload your completed file and review the entries, then select Save.
Supported language codes
Use one of the following codes for each language column in your CSV file:
en, fr, es, de, zh, ja, ko, pt, it, ru, ar, nl, pl, sv, hi, th, vi, tr, id, da, no, fi, uk, iw, el, ro, bg, cs, hu, bn, fa, hr, tl, ms, sr, sw, ur, be, bs, ca, et, gl, is, kn, lv, mk, ml, sk, hy, az, ka, gu, kk, lt, mt, mr, ne, or, sl, ta, te, af, as, ast, my, ha, jv, ky, lb, mi, oc, pa, tg, uz, cy, am, ga, km, ku, lo, mn, ps, sn, sd, so, wo, xh, zu, lg, ig, nso, ceb, ff, kea, ln, luo, ny, umb, zh-CN, zh-Hans, zh-Hant, zh-HK, zh-SG, zh-TW
To see which language each code refers to, see About supported languages for Vimeo AI's subtitle translations.
How to apply my dictionary to captions and translations
Your glossary is applied automatically when Vimeo AI generates a transcript or automatic captions in your video's original language.
For translations, the dictionary is optional and you choose it for each job:
- Start a translation from your video's settings page, from your library in bulk, or from the Captions panel in Event Studio for a live event.
- Select Use custom dictionary.
- Review the AI credit cost, then confirm.
How the AI dictionary affects AI credits
Applying your dictionary to a translation increases the number of AI credits that job uses. Note the following:
- Transcripts and automatic captions in your video's original language use your glossary at no additional cost.
- The premium is based on how much you have stored in your dictionary, so a larger dictionary means a higher cost per job. This applies on every plan, including plans with expanded limits. Keeping your dictionary focused on the terms that matter helps control your usage.
- The updated cost is shown before you confirm a job, so you can see what a translation will cost with and without your dictionary applied.
- AI credits are separate from any overage fees that apply when your dictionary is larger than the limits included in your plan.
