What is a custom subdomain?
A custom subdomain allows you to access your Vimeo Enterprise account at a URL like `{yourcompany}.vimeo.work`, providing a more secure and customized experience for your enterprise content.
Key benefits of using a custom subdomain
- Network compatibility: Some strict corporate networks or school systems have disabled vimeo.com due to the public nature of the website. Your custom subdomain is only used for your enterprise content, so you can ensure {yourcompany}.vimeo.work is enabled on relevant networks while leaving vimeo.com blocked
- Regional availability: Some countries, like Indonesia, have blocked vimeo.com. Since your custom subdomain is only for your enterprise content, your videos can now be viewed from these countries.
- Custom experience: In addition to more branded URLs, your custom subdomain provides a branded login portal for your users to log in instead of going through the general vimeo.com login experience.
What to expect when implementing a custom subdomain
- You will be accessing the same Vimeo Enterprise account with all your existing videos and data, just on a new domain.
- All admin page URLs, video URLs, and embed codes generated on your custom subdomain will use the new `vimeo.work` subdomain. Plus, since Video IDs remain unchanged, the URL structure of video clips will stay the same - you can basically substitute the vimeo.com domain with {yourcompany}.vimeo.work to easily switch over
- Your team members can access the account via the new subdomain using their existing login credentials. If you’re using single sign-on, you will just have to configure a new SAML connection for the new custom subdomain.
- While on your custom subdomain, you will not have access to public Vimeo pages like Staff Picks or the Watch page. The search bar on your custom subdomain will only display videos within your Vimeo Enterprise account, so you will not be able to search for or find other users’ content on your custom subdomain. To find other public content, you should continue to access these on vimeo.com.
- The "public" privacy setting is not available on custom subdomains. You can use privacy settings like "unlisted," "hide from Vimeo," "password," and "private." You can publish to external audiences without authentication by using “unlisted” and “hide from Vimeo”, but these videos will simply not be searchable and discoverable on the vimeo.com website.
- Existing embed codes from vimeo.com will continue to work, so you can ensure your embedded content doesn’t break once you switch over. We can also enable clip URL redirects so that any links shared with your users continue working
Additional considerations when using a custom subdomain
- Ensure your chosen subdomain aligns with your company's brand and that you have the necessary permissions to use it.
- If you have videos you wish to publish publicly on vimeo.com, consider storing them in a separate Vimeo account.
- Venues and the Vimeo mobile app are not compatible with custom subdomains.
How to set up my custom subdomain on Vimeo
- Choose Your Subdomain: Decide on the subdomain you want to use (e.g., `yourcompany.vimeo.work`). This should reflect your company's brand and be something you have the rights to use. Please note that changing this subdomain later can be complex, so choose carefully.
- Contact Your Vimeo Success Team: Reach out to your Vimeo success team to confirm your chosen subdomain. They will then enable the subdomain on your account.
-
SSO Configuration (If Applicable): If you use Single Sign-On (SSO), you will need to set up a new SSO SAML connection for your custom subdomain.
- Navigate to your SSO console and create a new SAML connection.
- Toggle on the Custom domain setting.
- Set up the new SAML connection with your Identity Provider (IdP) using the provided SAML settings, paying attention to the `vimeo.work` domain in the URLs.
- Access Your New Subdomain: Once your Vimeo success team confirms the subdomain is active, navigate to your custom subdomain (e.g., `yourcompany.vimeo.work`) and log in with SSO or your email and password, depending on your authentication settings.
- Turn off Public privacy settings: Your success team will coordinate with you on a time when they will migrate any “public” videos over to “private” or another privacy setting of your choosing. Then, we will also disable the ‘public’ privacy setting so that it cannot be used in the future. We will also enable clip URL redirects so any straggling videos already shared do not break.
- Turn off vimeo.com entirely: Finally, we will disable your account access from vimeo.com. You should use {yourcompany}.vimeo.work to log in and access your account going forward.
